Keynote Address by Dr. Karen Marrongelle, Vice Chancellor, Oregon University System

Title:The Time is Now: The Critical Role of Mathematics Education Research in Two-Year Colleges

Abstract: Students’ mathematics experiences in community colleges – from taking placement examinations to transferring to 4-year universities – has received increased attention from policymakers and the public in recent years. Never has the time been more critical for education researchers focused on the learning and teaching of mathematics in two-year institutions to contribute to evidenced-based policymaking. I will use some examples of current policy topics: placement, mathematics course sequences, and the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics to illustrate the potential role of mathematics education research focused at two-year colleges.
